Kerio View is close to the township of Iten (Population = 1800) at a height of 2300 m above sea level and 35 km from Eldoret on a good road. Local taxis or "matatus" are easily available to travel from Eldoret to Iten, but the journey may be a bit uncomfortable for those not used to the "matatu experience".
Kerio View is only 35 km from Eldoret town (Population = 200,000 ), which is one of the largest towns in Kenya and has all the usual urban facilities such as banks and supermarkets. It also has a small international airport; but, unfortunately, no direct flights from Europe and America. Overseas visitors have to take a local flight from Nairobi to Eldoret (taking about 1 hour), or travel the 300 km by road ---- which takes about 5 hours and is not to be recommended for the elderly or those with a nervous disposition. The Nairobi - Eldoret flight is provided by Aero Kenya and costs about Euro 55. Booking can be done in Nairobi airport or through any local travel agent.
Iten is the administrative centre of Keiyo District, inhabited by the Keiyo people who migrated to the area many hundreds of years ago, down the Great Rift from the Nile Valley regions of Ethiopia and Sudan. The Keiyo people presently number about 220,000 and have spread into neighbouring districts such as Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia as, gradually, they have moved away from their traditional pastoral way of life into settled agriculture. Despite the change in lifestyle, the people still preserve a strong affection for livestock, particularly cows.
