KERIO VIEW
Anin - Kerio walk

This route to the valley starts from near Anin school, which is 7km from,
and more than 200m lower than, KerioView; which makes it relatively short.
As one descends, many abandoned dwellings and animal bomas are to be
seen. They are now abandoned, but 10 years before they were hastily
constructed and occupied by valley people fleeing up the hillside with their
animals, to escape maurading cattle thieves from Pokot district. The Pokots
came with AK47s, so could not be easily resisted.
The route displays the bony ribs of the escarpment, the result of
differences in the rate of erosion of the many, closely-layered, hard and
soft rock strata. The erosive power of the hillside streams and rivers is
strikingly dispayed when one reaches the "main road" in the valley; it is
found to be dissected by numerous boulder-strewn gulleys. Huge masses
of concrete --- bits of former drifts, culverts and bridges ---- lie scattered
about, cast aside by the raging torrents of the rainy season.
The lower slopes of the hillside are steep and covered with loose stones,
boulders and gravel. This makes the going treacherous, particularly if you
divert from the rather indefinite route. Make sure you have good boots that
support the ankles.

The walk starts out beautifully cool and shady. Later it opens up onto open sloping ground with fine views of Kamnarok and the Tugen Hills
